The chess board consists of eight square columns by eight square rows arranged in two alternating colours. The colours are called “black” and “white” or “light” and “dark”, but competitive play usually uses dark green and buff boards. Starter boards are usually made from folding cardboard and are packed with checkers pieces. While extravagant boards can range from lustrous brass to alabaster stone, the most common are the ones made from light and dark woods. The woods can vary from rosewood, ebony, sheesham, maple, etc. My chess set currently has hundreds of chessboards ranging in size and colour. The wooden boards come with or without a satin finish.
