Staunton Chess Sets 4 Howard Staunton was as much an icon of the Victorian era as William Shakespeare himself. In fact, he even edited and an entire edition of Shakespeare’s plays. However his greatest legacy was his contribution to the game of chess. One of the true chess theorists of his time, Staunton wrote countless books on the game. He was responsible for the first international chess tournament held in London in 1851. Today his name carries on in the most recognized figures in chess, the Staunton chessmen.
